Week of 9/17


      It was so nice to see everyone at Open House this last Thursday:) I hope that all questions were answered and you feel a little more comfortable with LSS and our classroom.  Please always know that you can email or call at anytime with questions.
      This past week we started our first unit in literacy. We read a story called A Fine, Fine, School. The principal in the story loves school so much he decides to have school everyday of the week including holidays! Of course the kiddos were in shock:) In the end he learns that it is important for kids to learn outside of school and to spend time with their families. We read a connecting non-fiction text also about one room schoolhouses. We compared the similarities and difference to both schools using a Venn diagram. We also practiced our short vowel sound rule and reviewed how every sentence needs a predicate and subject.  We will continue with this unit through Tuesday and work in small groups with leveled readers.
      Multiplication and division were introduced this week along with collecting data and making bar graphs.  We have also been working on Dreambox and getting familiar with how to use it.  Telling time still has been tricky so keep practicing at home!
       We worked very hard this past week on typing our parent letters for Open House. Getting 18 students into Google Docs, writing a letter, editing, and sharing it is real work but we accomplished it! Hopefully you were able to read it and were able to learn a little more about our classroom.
       Remember that spelling homework is due on 9/25 and the students will also take their first spelling test. Also, don't forget that Learning Wheels come home every Friday and to please return the notebooks to school Monday. A few students were missing them on Friday. It's nice to have a collection of letters by the end of the year. You will be amazed by the growth! Please remember to write back also, the students really love to get notes back from home.

Week of Sept 10th

Last week was a great week of growth for the students. They are really starting to become comfortable with expectations and many of our 3rd grade routines are becoming habits.  We have been working on building our classroom community a lot. Our school just adopted a new program called Restorative Justice. I will be speaking about it in more detail at Open House but it is an excellent way for our class to come together and talk. We are able to work out problems and learn about each other in a more productive way. It is definitely a work in progress but I think by the end of  the year our classroom will be pros! In literacy last week we focused on our last Daily 5 routines which were Word work, Writing work, and Listening to reading. Lots of Updates!!!!

               Fall is here and we are growing so much! The students are becoming more comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations.  As a classroom community, we are learning how to be respectful, how to regulate our emotions, and how to be safe. We are wrapping up our unit on Community and have completed several culminating activities. Our visit to the Food Pantry taught us how our community of Exeter helps others in need. We went on a tour, donated our food items, and had many questions answered! The students were most fascinated with the fact that the Food Pantry is low on coffee....hahaaaa! Grab some extra coffee on your next grocery run and drop it by the pantry if you can:) We also interviewed Mrs. Donnelly, our assistant principal, this past week and learned about her role in our LSS community.
