Lots of Updates!!!!

Fall is here and we are growing so much! The students are becoming more comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations.  As a classroom community, we are learning how to be respectful, how to regulate our emotions, and how to be safe. We are wrapping up our unit on Community and have completed several culminating activities. Our visit to the Food Pantry taught us how our community of Exeter helps others in need. We went on a tour, donated our food items, and had many questions answered! The students were most fascinated with the fact that the Food Pantry is low on coffee....hahaaaa! Grab some extra coffee on your next grocery run and drop it by the pantry if you can:) We also interviewed Mrs. Donnelly, our assistant principal, this past week and learned about her role in our LSS community. The students are currently writing their own newspaper articles and sharing all they learned. Our slide shows are looking great and you can check them out on your child's google docs.  If you have not sent a picture of your child in one of their communities, please email me and we will add it to their slide show.

We have started our unit on Space. We have learned about the Sun and how it provides us with energy and is the central part of our Solar System. We have learned that there are 9 planets and the order they are in from the sun. Ask your child the funny sentence we learned to help us remember the order:) In the next few weeks we will learn about each planet, the moon and the affects it has on our planet, astronauts and space exploration. We will conduct a few experiments, and have some fun hands on activities.

During math we have explored multiplication and division, how to solve number stories, and how to create arrays. Your child should have now mastered 0, 1, 10, and 5 multiplication facts. We most recently learned how to divide and how to interpret remainders. Have your child show you how to create arrays using dice! They love it:)

This week we read a story called Pop's Bridge. This story was a historical fiction text and we were able to learn about how groups of people must work together to accomplish a goal. We learned that every person has a role and no job is less important than another. The students were introduced to common and proper nouns and we have been working hard on our reading fluency. When we read our expression, rate, and accuracy is important and helps us to comprehend the text better.

Our class is so excited to celebrate the Fall season by checking out the Cornfield Characters the third graders have been working so hard on and coming together as a class to have a Halloween celebration with snacks and activities on Friday. Thank you to all the parents that worked hard to contribute and coordinate this celebration.

Report cards will go home next Friday and I look forward to meeting with parents on the 6th to discuss student progress. If you have not signed up yet, please see the link on the group email that was sent out this week. If you are unable to meet on the 6th please reach out to me and we can find an alternative time. Enjoy the upcoming weekend and get those kiddos outside to run, jump, roll and play! They work so hard all week and need the down time to be kids:)
