We Are Off and Running!

Welcome to our classroom blog! I will try to keep you updated weekly with upcoming events,
volunteer opportunities, and info about our classroom curriculum.

The first week of school went very well. The students were able to tour the school, get acquainted with our classroom, and meet many of our LSS staff members.  The next few weeks will focus on creating a routine, creating bonds with our classroom community, and establishing expectations. We spent the first few days of school getting to know each other, learning what it takes to be a good reader through our Daily 5 program, exploring our math manipulatives, and just having fun! I am so lucky to have such a great group of kids this year. My heart is very blessed:)

This week we will begin our Everyday Math lessons. The first Unit will focus on reviewing basic second grade math skills. This will give me an opportunity to see where the students' strengths and weaknesses fall. I will also administer the Fall Math and Reading STAR test so that I am better able to see where students are at and if any summer regression occurred. The results of this testing will guide me in instruction and help me to focus on the needs of each student.

Next week we will begin our reading and spelling program.  You will also see math and spelling homework begin to come home next week. Homework should be a maximum of 30 minutes total. If you feel that your child is struggling and that the homework is taking well beyond 30 minutes, please stop and send in a note. We will continue to work on it at school.

Our first Social Studies unit will focus on Maps and Globes. We will learn about the differences between Maps and Globes, map keys, directions, and the seven continents. This unit creates a foundation of geography understanding for our future Social Studies units.

Ask your child about our first Read Aloud, Frindle! A great book about a young, creative boy, who changes the dictionary forever!

Any questions please always feel free to email or call me.
